2007 Diego Huerga Belleza Magica
Diego Huerga
Here is another Belleza Magica from Diego Huerga for you to choose from. It is another with a spectacular looking and sounding Lucky 12 Sitka spruce soundboard. Completed in 2007, we have kept it here in our FGC vault for a while and allowed it to begin the maturation process.
Brazilian rosewood can present itself in so many interesting colors and forms! It is treasured for its tonal contribution to the sound of a guitar, its rarity, and its beauty. This back looks like it was dripped with paint!--but it is nature at work, showing through geologic sign language, the trials and tribulations of this old tree as it grew through the seasons, exposed to the elements of Northeast Brazil.
Diego Huerga has a background that has prepared him well for intense guitar making--completely by hand. He is an accomplished wood sculptor, has much experience in fine jewely making, and studied industrial design engineering for eight years at a university. His spiritual nature in his approach to guitar making is reverant. He makes each instrument one at a time. He is convinced, in his heart, that the techniques he studied at the hands of a classical guitar master luthier are only a part of what is necessary to make an excellent guitar. Diego puts his great love for the guitar into each instrument. Like the old alchemists, he puts his entire spirit into each one, as well. He feels that it is the combination of these elements that brings the high result he achieves.
Having played and sold several of these Belleza Magica guitars, I can tell you that this feels exactly right. His consistency has also been right on the money. Speaking of money, this is a guitar where you can hear every nickel. You are paying for superior materials and half a lifetime of unique experience and knowledge.
Let's talk sound:?"Too many of us have tried to coax more volume out of a guitar by hitting the strings harder with a pick. We spank those strings with force--only to hear a compressed maximum volume that is choked and the sound dies quickly. This 'headroom' limitation is all too familiar. 'Headroom' is one of the important characteristics we look for in a guitar here at FGC. I will admit that not every player needs or wants loud volume in an instrument. We take this into consideration when we match players with their ideal guitars. For those who want the power to have on hand, though, the gear search can get old after a while! If you are on such a search for power, this guitar has as much as you may ever need.
This guitar is 'ridiculously loud.' Please use volume responsibly. It is far better to whack a rhythm passage occasionally for special effect than to drive your friends out of the circle and cause ear damage! The other news about this guitar is its ability to play softly and expressively with a light attack, as well. Some loud guitars only sound good when you work them hard. 'This Belleza Magica' lives up to its name. Magic Beauty. Choose light or medium strings, with no alteration to the set-up.??
Some specs: The instrument is suprisingly light in weight and is comfortable to hold for average to larger size players. The lower bout measures 16 5/8", the upper bout is 12", and the depth of the guitar at its beautiful bottom (with ivory end graft made from recycled piano keys!) is 4 1/8". The scale length of the guitar is 25". Playability is easy for reasonably muscle-toned hands. The nut width, at our request, is 1 13/16". The hand carved neck is a medium C-shape and is very comfortable for average to large hands. The reason for this geometry is obvious when you play this guitar. While we acknowledge that one guitar cannot usually cover all the musical bases--This one comes as close as you would hope. It is a great fingerstyle instrument and a wonderful rhythm guitar as well. A Brazilian rosewood bridge, hand scalloped to mimick the headstock design, seems to create a parenthesis announcing where the action takes place on this serious piece of music business. The rosette, calling upon Diego's jewelry background, is a 1mm. thick carved plate of 18kt yellow gold.
