Under the direction of versatile Jazz guitarist Art Johnson, The Cool Club Quartet rode again for a total of 5 stellar performances in San Diego since January. Double bass masters Bob Magnusson and Tom Azarello brought their world class contribution to this Django-style homage. Chris Vitas executed his inspired violin solos over the top of some rock-solid rhythm guitar work from Bob Cartwright. The Cool Club Quartet first performed at San Diego's Horton Grand Hotel on June 10, 1995. All consumate pros, their rehearsals prior to the date quickly brought each musician on a collective wavelength. This tight team approach is needed to bring off Gypsy Jazz with emotional feeling and a relaxed confidence that gets transmitted to the audiences. After the 1995 date, each member went on to the variety of musical combinations and experiences that makes up the stuff of a professional career. All involved with their own performing, teaching, composing, arranging, recording, and touring, it was Art Johnson who got the bee in his bonnett to call the group back together. Art called me from his home in the South of France, where at the time, he was playing all styles of music with some of the top musicians on the european scene today. One of these fine musicians was Birelli LaGrene (coming to San Diego in March) and other top Gypsy Jazz players. Accepted into the Gypsy ensembles because of Art's adept technique in that style, the idea occured to him to bring back The Cool Club Quartet when he made his next regular swing through our part of the world. I volunteered to get the ball rolling by doing some of the leg work in contacting the members of the group, booking venues and a radio interview performance to kick things off. This was their 3-night concert schedule: Concert #1 Who: "The Cool Club Quartet" Art Johnson, guitar; Bob Magnusson, concert bass; Chris Vitas, violin; Bob Cartwright, guitar What: Gypsy Jazz music (Dinner reservations available) When: Friday Jan. 17 at 7pm Where: Victor's On The Bay, at the Mission Bay Golf Course 2702 N. National Fingerpicking Guitar Champion Richard Smith took the stage with guest Julie Adams (permanent guest, that is...she married him!) Richard Smith and Julie Adams performed at Dizzy's in downtown San Diego November 20, 2002. That night, Richard Smith took possession of his new Scott Van Linge steel string guitar from Fine Guitar Consultants. Richard Smith is taking it everywhere he tours, and audiences (as well as other guitar players) have appreciated its perfect balance and big sound. Dizzy's, by the way, is a family-friendly venue that serves no alcohol, so typically, people bring friends and family when they want to see inspired and world-class guitar playing as well as other great musical cominations. This duo did a great pre-show interview/performance the evening before on KPBS 89.5 FM. They were Dirk Sutro's guests on "The Lounge." Clicking on the small photos to the right of the thumbnails will take you to more photos. Between August 1-4, 2002, Dimitri Diatchenko left his mark on San Diego. ![]() |
